What is UPS?

The full name of UPS is Uninterruptible Power Supply. It is an electronic device. Inside which a battery is connected along with electronic parts. It is used when. When the electric supply shuts down. And then it provides electric supply with the help of computer. So the computer is not locked and the data inside is also protected. UPS of many sizes and many shapes are available in the market, but they are usually of rectangular and freestanding style.



UPS is basically an Inverter with batteries that is used to provide battery backup and surge protection for electronic equipment such as PCs, servers, audio video video, etc. Some UPS also come with voltage regulation. The UPS charges the battery and provides power from the wall outlet during normal operation. Due to a power outage, it switches to battery mode and ensures that the connected devices are protected.

 Types of UPS

1. Standby UPS

Standby UPS is then used. When the power supply shuts down. Then it supplies the consumed power to the computer when the power is off. In which the computer's data is safe.

2. Line Interactive UPS

Designing a Line Interactive UPS is similar to a standby UPS. It is a combination of both UPS online and offline. This UPS is used for small businesses. And at the same time it controls the electrical effect of the UPS output.

3. Standby Online Hybrid

Standby on-line hybrid is a topology used in UPS under 10 kva. Which is switched on from battery to standby converter. The battery charger is much smaller than it is in Stand By UPS.

Functions of UPS

1. It controls power from an unstable source.

2. Allows the user to switch computers correctly and save work.

3. Provides protection against damage to the computer.

4. Turns off the equipment automatically during a long power outage.

5. Monitoring and logging the status of the power supply. Resumes the device after a long power outage.

6. Provides alarms on some error situations.

7. Provides short-circuit protection.

Main Parts of UPS

1. Rectifier: It is an electrical device. The main function of rectifier is to convert AC to DC. Which converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

2. Battery: A battery is an Electro-chemical cell that is charged for electricity. When an electric power is supplied, its positive terminal is cathode. And its negative terminal is anode.

3. Inverter: This is also an electrical device that performs the reverse function of the rectifier process. It converts incoming DC supplies to AC for load usage. Which converts low voltage DC to high voltage AC. In an solar electric system, an inverter can take 12, 24 or 48 volts DC. And converts it to 115 or 230 AC, domestic electricity.

Advantages of UPS

1. Organizes all computer and electric systems in the event of a power outage.

2. Unlike generating a backup, an UPS has almost no noise output.

3. In a UPS, if the electric device stops running, your data is safe.

4. UPS units are Eco-friendly and run on batteries that can last up to five years.

5. Sudden computer shutdown causes data loss. But if UPS is connected to the computer then the data is protected.

Disadvantages of UPS

1. The UPS battery does not last long and has to be replaced when needed.

2. UPS batteries have to keep a charge for a long time.

3. A major investment is required to set up UPS power supply in large corporate offices.

Difference between UPS and Inverter

UPS:- UPS provides power in case of power cut and most of the UPS desktop is used to backup the computer.

Inverter:- is a battery and Inverter circuit that converts DC to electricity and most of the Inverter is used for power backup in homes.

UPS:- UPS is commonly used to back up the system because it takes a microsecond to fall on the backup power solution.

Inverter:- Inverter computer is not used to back up due to delay in switching. Because a computer loses only data and unsaved data but can also damage the hard disk and motherboard.
